Merrow – an elven thief
Deldrin Baleson – beleaguered sheriff of Falcon’s Hollow
To Catch A Thief
24 Fiann, 3032 PA
The evening was peaceful, apart from the constant, muffled drum of rain on the inn’s shingle roof. A warm, rich light suffused the room from the fire in the hearth, casting everything in tones of red, yellow, and brown. Dark shadows danced in the corners of the common room, turning the tables and patrons furthest from the fire into shapeless forms of brown and black. A dull hum of conversation could be vaguely heard over the lazy pop and crackle of the fire.
The peace was instantly shattered by a crash of glass from the floor above, followed by a long cry of despair! The party raced up the stairs, some more cautiously than others, to find Engrit slumped in the doorway of his room, a bloody gash on his head. He raised an unsteady hand, pointing into the room, and uttered a single word, ‘Thief!’
Wind and rain lashed in through a smashed window, soaking scattered papers and the clothes discarded from an upturned chest. In the darkness, a black-clad figure could be seen fleeing nimbly across rain-slick rooftops. The party gave chase, along the town’s rooftops, except for Sonia and Dymas. Sonia held to her natural caution and was soon left behind, while Dymas opted to pursue along the streets, using his magic to quicken the feet of himself or his compatriots.
The thief proved elusive and agile until, slowed by a cut on her leg inflicted by Raina, she jumped down onto the street. Raina and Kiera both threw caution to the wind, flinging themselves from the roof in an attempt to bring the thief to bay. Raina mistimed her jump and winded herself in a bad landing, but Kiera was on target and bore the thief to the ground at the feet of an astonished watchman. Cornered, the elven woman threw her stolen package at the watchman and pleaded to be arrested.
The thief was soon taken into custody by the town sheriff – a handsome, soft-spoken man named Deldrin – and the stolen item returned to Engrit. The merchant’s relief was obvious as he opened the oilskin to check for damage, giving a glimpse of a statuette to curious onlookers. Unfortunately, the only party member who might recognise such an item was away at dinner, awkwardly fending off the advances of Kitani Eavewalker, a raven haired beauty who seemed determined to show her ‘appreciation’ for her daughter’s recent rescue.
