The party awake from a well deserved night’s rest to find that they are local heroes – for now, at least. They are greeted by a crowd of thankful citizens outside their inn, although a few sullen faces can be seen in the crowd. The group spend half the morning taking care of personal business while Kiera tracks down the Gavel, Thuldrin ban-Kreed.
The Gavel, after an offer of help, explains that his son and several other children have been missing for two nights. Although Thuldrin’s tone is brusque, he accepts Kiera’s offer of aid and gives her a couple of leads. He also makes sure that the merchants of Falcon’s Hollow offer the party a hefty discount.
After being briefed on the task, the party sets out to gather information and supplies. They learn that, of the five children that are missing, Kimmi Eavewalker is likely the group’s ringleader; Mikra is a kind-hearted but slow boy; Hollin is an expert woodcarver, even at his young age; and Savram’s father is a mysterious recluse that lives in the High Market. Milon Rhoddam tracked the children to Elara’s Halfway House, an orphanage outside of town that burnt to the ground six months ago.
Seekers of Lost Children
Deciding not to waste too much time, the heroes set out to the hilltop orphanage. It is nearing evening by the time they reach the burnt out shell of what was once a large building.
Charred timbers and caked ash are all that remains of the orphanage, apart from a few heart-rending reminders of the occupants. Damian locates several sets of tracks in the area before he and Kiera investigate the ruin. They quickly determine that the fire was far from accidental, and discover a trap door. Busting open the charred portal, the party discovers a cellar that seems to have escaped the fiery destruction of the building above. All is not right, however, as they find a scene of horror in the dank chamber. Implements of torture lay on a table and old blood stains the floor. A par of rusted shackles hang from a wall.
On the floor lays a rotting corpse that matches the description of Elara, the mistress of the orphanage. Uneasy at this scene, Sonia and Dymas climb up to rejoin Boris, who has seen a child lurking in the nearby wood’s edge. Kiera, Raina, and Damain are assaulted by a nest of hundreds of spiders that burst from Elara’s corpse, as well as their monstrous mother. Raina flees the cellar, leaving Kiera and Damian to dispose of the eight-legged threat. Damain clears away the swarm with several bolts from his rune-bow, while Kiera dispatches the larger brood-mother.
Up above, Raina manages to creep up on the child and catch her. A skinny girl in a green dress called Jeva, apparantly the sole survivor of the tragic fire, has been hiding in the woods, fearing that the residents of the Hollow will blame her for the blaze.
Much to Sonia’s discomfort, Jeva takes a liking to the young priestess. She explains that the missing children from town were indeed at the orphanage but were abducted by ‘the small men with scales’, and indicates that they were taken into the forest towards Droskar’s Crag.
